Malaysia digital nomads
Planning to live and work remotely in Malaysia? We help you explore applicable pathways, application documents and next steps.
The pathway
The DE Rantau digital nomad pass is for eligible remote workers. Check the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) for current rules on occupations, work arrangements, income and applications. MM2H is a separate long-term residence programme, not the digital nomad pass.
Prepare your application
Depending on your circumstances, prepare a passport, remote employment or client contracts, proof of income and insurance. Check the application channel, fees and family requirements. In its 29 October 2026 announcement, MDEC stated that new applications are closed from 1 to 30 November 2026 and scheduled to resume on 1 December under the enhanced framework; eligible first renewals remain open. Check for updates before applying.
After approval
Check the pass validity, renewal conditions, permitted work and family arrangements. Cross-border income may create tax and reporting obligations; check your individual position.
